Lively Athlone for those who seek an urban buzz is one of the two biggest towns in the county. It is situated on the river Shannon and has an impressive Norman Castle dating back to 1210. Mullingar the other major town in the County is a busy market town set in spectacular countryside and is also well worth visiting. Two of Ireland's best craft studios, which create fine bronze and pewter work, are located here. Rockfield House and it's magnificent gardens also make a pleasant day out.
Other places of interest are Tullynally Castle, the home of Lord Longford which lies a mile west of Castlepollard village. It's gardens are open to the public during the summer.
Lockes Distillery in Kilbeggan is another great stop off spot where you will see this now retired distillery restored to it's former glory. Conducted tours and whiskey tasting are part of the magic.
