Dungarvan, which in Irish means Garbhans Fort, referring to Saint Garbhan who founded a church there in the 7th Century is a wonderful market town divided in two by the Colligan River and nestling against the beautiful back drop of the Comeragh Mountains in Waterford County.

There is plenty to see and do in Dungarvan, now a thriving market town, for instance the Old Market House Arts Centre in the town centre. This building has a remarkable history as many were executed in the vicinity during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Waterford County Museum in the old Town Hall has a permanent display of the history of Waterford County and also runs temporary exhibitions on other local historical topics.

St. Johns Anglo-Norman castle dating back to the 12th Century is really worth a visit as is St. Mary’s Church built in 1828.

While in the area a visit to Coumshingaun Lake in the Comeragh Mountains is very worth while as this is amazing glacial lake was formed by glacier movement during the ice age and is the finest example of its kind in Europe.

Apart from the historical, Dungarvan has a range of activities to suit everyone from paint balling to hill walking, golf and pitch and putt, sea angling and car rallying experience.

For those looking for shopping and pampering the town has it all. A large shopping centre, small antique stores, quaint specialist shops and food stores and of course the all important spa treatments.

There are some great pubs beautifully decorated to reflect the history of the area. Many have food available ranging from soup and sandwiches to full a la carte. Many have live music at night and traditional sessions on special nights.
