Originally a market town serving the needs of the people of County Mayo, Castlebar has developed into a superb vibrant County town while retaining the old market town charm and traditions.

It is renowned for its variety of outdoor activities, its interesting shopping areas and for it cultural and historical centre.

For the ladies that like to get their energy levels up and their pulses racing nothing would be more exciting in Castlebar than either a round of golf, or the fun of a pitch and putt competition or indeed horse riding or pony trekking with the option of lessons for the novices.

Hill walking and sightseeing is very popular in the area as is angling.

For culture, art and theatre lovers a visit to the Linen Hall is an interesting experience where they specialise in programming international, national and local arts events.

A must while in the area is a visit to the Turlough county park, just 4 miles from the town. This award winning branch of the National Museum of Ireland brings to life the traditions of rural life throughout Ireland from 1850 until close to our time. The exhibitions on four floors focus on customs and festivals, farming and fishing, life in the home, fashions and clothes worn in the 1850s.

The town has a wide range of shops from the big department stores to the quaint boutiques.

With over 40 pubs and several excellent nightclubs the late night revellers will have plenty of options. There are some fine restaurants serving a la carte menus, chinese restaurants, pizza parlours and for the really casual group the choice of just having a good old fashioned takeaway.
